SOUL OF BANDONEON
By Enrique Santos Discépolo
Recorded in 1935 for the movie of the same name.
I made fun of you
because I didn’t understand you
neither I understood your pain…
I had the sensation
that your cruel song
you had stolen, bandoneón…
I now understand well
the desperation
that it revolves you when groaning
you are a caterpillar that wanted
to be butterfly before dying!
It was your voice,
bandoneón,
the one that confided to me
the pain of failure
that is within your to groan;
voice that is bottom
of the dark life
and without pardon,
of the one that dreamt to fly
and drags your illusion
crying it…
The same as you I dreamt…
The same as you I lived
without reaching my ambition.
Bandoneon soul
– Soul that I drag –
voice of misfortune and of love!…
I will look for you when dying,
I will call you in my good-bye,
to ask you for forgiveness…
and when pressing you in my arms
to give you my heart in pieces.
